Dietary Supplements: Do they help or hurt?

Before making decisions about whether to take a supplement, talk to your healthcare provider. They can help you achieve a balance between the foods and nutrients you personally need. Vitamin and mineral supplements can be useful in certain situations, for example when your doctor has diagnosed a particular deficiency.

Getting our nutrients straight from a pill sounds easy, but supplements don’t automatically deliver on the promise of improved health.  There are so many different products, often sold by huge companies with advertising budgets to match, that it can be difficult to determine what’s marketing spin, and what is actually necessary for optimum health.

Why is it better to get nutrients from food rather than supplements?

When considering health, you may want to improve your diet before thinking about taking supplements. Research has shown that food offers three primary benefits over supplements. This is because nutrients are most potent when they come from food they are accompanied by beneficial nutrients, such as hundreds of carotenoids, flavonoids, minerals, and antioxidants that aren’t in most supplements essential fibre to manage constipation and help prevent certain diseases, and protective substances like “phytochemicals” that occur naturally and can help prevent cancer, heart disease, diabetes.

We require a variation of nutrients every day to stay healthy, involving calcium and vitamin D to protect our bones, folic acid to produce and maintain new cells, and vitamin A to preserve a healthy immune system and vision. We can get the source of these important nutrients from fruit, vegetables, fish, and other healthy foods contain nutrients and other substances not found in a pill We can’t get the same synergistic effect from a supplement.

The average diet leaves a lot to be desired. Research discovers our plates lacking in a number of necessary nutrients, including calcium, potassium, magnesium, and vitamins A, C, and D. It’s no wonder that more than half of us open a supplement bottle to get the nutrition we need. Many of us take supplements not just to make up for what we’re missing, but also because we hope to give ourselves an extra health boost, a preventive buffer to ward off disease.

For those of us who live demanding lives it’s easy to just grab a coffee on our way to work, a pastry in your lunch break and a processed meal for your evening meal. But how does lack of variation in your diet affect your health? A poor diet can lead to a range of nutritional deficiencies, which present themselves in various ways. 

The dietary supplements market, which includes vitamins, herbs, enzymes, amino acids and minerals is booming within the UK. The forecasts value of the vitamins and supplements market from an expected £421 million in 2016 to £475 million (best case) and £439 million (worst case) in 2021.

The covid pandemic has led to more individuals looking to boost their immune system with the expectation of fighting the disease. Sales of immune boosting vitamins such as Vitamin D boosted by 29.8% over the four weeks leading up to lockdown being implemented on 23 March 2020, a tendency that continued after lockdown measures were eased.

What you need to know before taking a vitamin or mineral supplement? 

Supplements have to be fully digested to work. If your stomach acid levels are low due to stress, poor diet or you smoke, you might as well flush those tabs down the loo. Cheap supplements are more difficult for your body to process, the top of the rang versions will be marked bisglycinate cheaper versions will say oxide or carbonate on the label. 

Vitamin C is the Go to when we have a cold coming on. Nutrients work in teams, so while vitamin C does boost your immune system, it needs iron to be properly digested.

Many of us take our vitamins in one go, thinking we are doing our health a favour. However, taking excess of water-soluble nutrients such as vitamin C and B will be simply flushed down the loo. Your doses should be split by taking them 2-3 times a day to get any benefit.

Are there any risks in taking supplements?

Yes. Several supplements contain active ingredients that have strong biological effects in the body. This might make them unsafe in some situations and hurt or complicate your health. For instance, the following actions could lead to harmful, even life-threatening consequences.

  • Combining supplements
  • Using supplements with medicines (whether prescription or over-the-counter)
  • Substituting supplements for prescription medicines
  • Taking too much of some supplements, such as vitamin A, D, or iron. Some supplements can also have unwanted effects before, during, and after surgery. So, make sure to inform your healthcare provider, including your pharmacist about any supplements you are taking.

The hype and excitement over supplements:

There’s so much hype when it comes to supplements, about their potential benefits, such as vitamin D as a possible protection against a long list of diseases, including cancer, diabetes, depression, and even the common cold. Omega-3 fatty acids have been plugged for warding off strokes and other cardiovascular events. And antioxidants such as vitamins C and E and beta carotene were seen as hopeful silver bullets against heart disease, cancer, and even Alzheimer’s disease. So, it can be difficult to separate fact from fiction. Although it’s true that vitamins and minerals are crucial to health, it’s not factual that taking them in pill, capsule, or powder form, particularly in mega doses, is required, or without risks.

When used correctly, certain supplements could improve your health, but others can be ineffectual or even harmful. For example, research linked daily doses of more than 1,000 milligrams (mg) of calcium to a greater risk of death from cancer. Additionally, the data showed that individuals who took in adequate amounts of magnesium, zinc, and vitamins A and K had a lower risk of death, but only if they got those nutrients from food rather than supplements.

Some supplements are important when trying for a baby : It is recommended, when trying to conceive for a baby that you take 400 micrograms of folic acid supplements. Folic acid can help to prevent neural tube defects such as spina bifida. 

 

Vegans and vegetarians:

Vegans and vegetarians should get all the nutrients the body needs with good planning and a good understanding. However, certain food choices are not always enjoyed, so there for supplements could be recommended Vegetarians need to make sure they get enough iron and vitamin B12, and vegans enough calcium, iron and vitamin B12. Women are thought to be at particular risk of iron deficiency, including those on a vegetarian or vegan diet.

 

Vitamin D:

It is recommended during autumn and winter, that you may consider taking a vitamin D supplement if not sourced from your diet. As the sun is not strong enough for your body to make vitamin D. Because  it’s difficult to get enough vitamin D from food alone, everyone including pregnant or breastfeeding women should take a daily supplement containing 10 micrograms of vitamin D during autumn and winter.

 

Before taking supplements consult a pharmacist or your doctor first:

Before you take any supplements for disease prevention, it’s important to know whether the potential benefits outweigh the risks. To make that conclusion, you need to look at the results of well-designed studies. A recent randomised trial in men suggested multivitamins have possible benefits for cancer prevention. For many of the other popular supplements, including vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids, results from randomised controlled trials should be available within the next five years.

Until then, be judicious about your use of supplements. If you’re lacking in a particular nutrient, ask your doctor whether you need to look beyond your diet to make up for what you’re missing—but don’t take more than the recommended daily intake for that nutrient unless your health care provider advises it.

Should we all be washing our fresh food products?

There are about 2.4m cases of food poisoning in the UK every year, more than double the estimate in 2009. According to the Food Standards Agency. The World Health Organisation (WHO) have advised all shoppers should wash all fruit and vegetables to reduce the risk of contracting coronavirus. Although the NHS UK said it was very unlikely Covid-19 was being spread through things like packages or food. People who eat contaminated produce can get very ill and even require hospitalisation. In this article, it will look at why it is important to wash fruits and vegetables, involving pesticides and possible contamination.

Food production is a huge industry, so it’s (unfortunately) impossible for producers to avoid contamination 100 percent of the time. The rules and regulations are extremally strict on every level, cases of cross contamination we hear about are usually linked to unforeseen circumstances and can happen at any time during the production process. Animal or human faeces contamination of the fresh produce food supply can happen when there are breakdowns in sanitation and hygiene practices on farms or throughout packing and processing for example, produce is frequently grown in open fields and orchards that aren’t sterile. Wild animals, like deer, birds, or rodents, may enter fields or waterways and spread bacteria or parasites to fruits, nuts, and veggies.

The vast majority of people believe that the food we buy in supermarkets and corner shops is safe to eat (even if it’s not always the healthiest options!)

A rising amount of our food is supplied through complex supply chains that can link to producers world-wide. Each item has several risks linked with it on the journey from farm or producer to you the consumer. Numerous factors along the food supply chains can affect the health of consumers:

  • From pesticides, herbicides and GM crops on the farm, to contamination from pests;
  • From handling practices at every point along the chain, to the ingredients of processed foods and the methods used to make them;
  • From storage conditions and food packaging to labelling adequately informing the consumer of safety and dietary considerations;
  • And lastly, of course, the hygienic handling of products in the store.

Throughout our stores there is also a numerous of ways in which food is presented to you the buyer. Fruit and vegetables come loose, bagged, chopped, peeled and packaged. Fridge displays and fresh food counters offer raw meats, seafood, multiple types of dairy products, cooked products and other prepared foods. These give a multitude of occasions where the safety of consumers can be compromised. 

Hygiene of employees:

Personal habits that are not acceptable around food preparation include:

  • smoking;
  • spitting;
  • touching the hair, face or parts of the body or clothing;
  • eating;
  • working while ill with diarrhoea, vomiting or any infectious diseases
  • working with open wounds or skin infections;
  • wearing watches or jewellery, as they can fall in the food;

 

Adequate hand washing with soap is essential:

  • after handling: raw meat and equipment used to cut it; food waste and containers; cash, phones or door handles;
  • after using the toilet;
  • after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing;
  • before and after wearing gloves;
  • after using cleaning products, such as cloths, sponges, mops, cleaning and sterilising chemicals, pesticides, etc.

 

What can we do to protect ourselves and others?

Although the majority of people know its unhygienic to handle unpackaged food items in store, but unfortunately, I think most of us are guilty off doing exactly this. So maybe we all should be mindful and take responsibility for our own and others safety and health when we can. There have been some horrific accounts of customers spreading germs at grocery stores. When we grab a trolley or basket we could go on to contaminate produce within the store. As shopping trollies and baskets have been found to have higher levels of bacteria than surfaces in public toilets and other public places. 

Furthermore, individuals may cough or sneeze into their hand, then continuing to rummage through the produce, there are just too many factors out of your control that could lead to food contamination. You basically cannot trust the fellow customer to make the right choices in what they are handling.  

How should I handle loose fruit and vegetables when shopping? 

Infection rate is quite small when handling these produce, as long as good hygiene practice is observed, so it’s not necessary to immediately to wash your hands. However, if you intend to eat the produce immediately then wash the produce before consuming.

We need to learn to methodically wash fruits and vegetables before cooking or consuming them. Produce that the manufacturer has prewashed does not need additional rinsing, however, there are two main risks of consuming unwashed fruits and vegetables: bacterial contamination and pesticides. In current years, several outbreaks of foodborne illness have come from contaminated cantaloupe, spinach, tomatoes, and lettuce. The risk was highlighted in the 2011 Escherichia coli (E. coli) outbreak in the UK. Caused by soil stuck on leeks. And in 2016, the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) investigated an outbreak of Listeriosis that hospitalised 19 individuals and one person died. 

How should fruit and vegetables be washed properly?

Most of the bacteria will be in the soil attached to the produce, Washing will help remove any soil, bacteria, including E. coli, from the surface of fruit and vegetables. Place items under a running tap and gently rub them. Salad spinners are very good at washing salad produce as it removes excess water.

The UK has some of the most stringent food safety and hygiene legislation in the world. there are concerns about how food safety standards will be affected following Brexit. Food safety fears for the forthcoming future for UK trade deals. Figures propose that the proportion of people who fall ill with food poisoning yearly is up to ten times higher in the US than the UK. We fear that treating increased food poisoning could increase deaths from food poisoning and cost the NHS and UK economy at least £1bn additional per year.

Can your diet affect Arthritis?

What is arthritis?

Arthritis is a common health condition involving chronic inflammation in your joints. It causes pain and damage to joints, bones, and other body parts depending on the type of arthritis. In the UK, more than 10 million people have arthritis or other, similar conditions that affect the joints. Arthritis affects people of all ages, including children. Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are the 2 most common types of arthritis.

 

How can my diet affect my condition? 

Consuming a healthy balanced diet with all the vitamins and minerals that’s necessary are important and are vital for everyone, but for individuals with arthritis it could help to lower the side effects of some drugs and protect against conditions affecting the heart and blood, which can be a complication of some forms of arthritis. Did you know that the foods we consume can affect arthritis pain and symptoms? Inflammation, a key cause of arthritis, is often made worse (or better) because of an individual’s diet.

It’s very important to eat a healthy, balanced diet if you have arthritis. Scientists have discovered several links between arthritis and diet, by making small changes to your diet and lifestyle can help reduce the levels of urate in your body. While there are no pacific diets or supplements that will cure your arthritis, some individuals find their condition is affected by what they eat, how much they weigh and their physical activity levels.  

Eating healthy:

Your diet should consist of a variety of foods from all 5 food groups. These are: 

  • Fruit and vegetables 
  • Starchy foods – bread, potatoes, rice, and pasta 
  • Meat, fish, eggs and beans 
  • Milk and dairy foods

Weight loss if overweight losing weight can really help with arthritis. Too much weight places extra pressure on the joints in your hips, knees, ankles and feet, leading to increased pain and mobility problems. Being overweight can also increase your risk of developing certain conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis or gout. If you eat fewer calories, it’s essential to keep a balance between different types of food so you don’t lose out on vital nutrients. For example, it’s important to avoid invisible fats in foods like:

 

Foods to avoid:

Biscuits, cakes, chocolate, pastry and savoury snacks or limit them to special occasions, always check the labels.

  • choose lean cuts of meat, which contain less saturated fat, and always trim off any excess fat 
  • choose fish and poultry more often 
  • use skimmed or semi-skimmed milk 
  • use low- or reduced-fat dairy products (for example yogurt, low-fat cheese) 
  • use low-fat, olive-oil- or soya-based margarines 
  • grill instead of frying 
  • use a very small amount of olive oil if you need to for cooking (if you want to fry foods, use rapeseed oil, which smokes less) 
  • fill up on wholegrain breads, cereals, fruits and vegetables 
  • look for snacks that are naturally low in fat, such as fruit, vegetable sticks or plain popcorn – small amounts of nuts and seeds provide good fats but don’t appear to cause weight gain.

 

Saturated fats are the most important kind of fat to reduce since they can increase inflammation and pain in the body. Monounsaturated fats are neutral or even useful fats in that they don’t make inflammation worse. But they contain just as many calories as saturated fats. polyunsaturated fatty acids are useful in the diet and are found in rapeseed oil, walnuts, free-range eggs (depending on the chicken feed), oily fish and fish oil supplements.

Reduce your sugar intake as sugar includes only calories and has no other food value (so-called ‘empty calories’), so you can cut down on it without losing any nutrients. Eating 30 g (about 1 oz) less sugar each day saves 120 calories.

Consume more fruit and vegetables, at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day. Ensuring your body gets the essential nutrients exceptionally vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that is needed to stay in good health. Brightly coloured vegetables and fruits are rich in antioxidants, as are leafy green vegetables. It’s been implied that antioxidants may help to protect the joints by mopping up some of the chemicals, known as free radicals, which may cause inflammation. 

Consume starchy foods like potatoes, rice and pasta. Wholemeal versions are better as they include more fibre and so are more filling for longer. Fibre is also good for your bowels. Wholemeal versions often provide more vitamins and minerals than white varieties. Fruit (but not fruit juices) and vegetables are low in calories but will still provide plenty of the nutrients you need.

 

The most important vitamins and minerals for people with arthritis are: 

  • calcium 
  • vitamin D 
  • iron. 

 

Other nutrients that may play a part are vitamin C and selenium. Calcium is important for keeping your bones healthy.

We get the majority of our vitamins and minerals from the food we eat rather than from supplements. Not having enough (a deficiency) of some vitamins and minerals appears to be linked with arthritis progressing more quickly.

Calcium deficiency increases the threat of osteoporosis (brittle bones), which is especially common in females after the menopause. What is Celiac Disease and how to cope with it ?

Celiac disease, also spelt as Coeliac, and occasionally called celiac sprue or gluten-sensitive enteropathy, is a condition where the immune system attacks your own tissues when you eat gluten.

This damages your gut (small intestine) which is an immune reaction to eating gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. Over time, this reaction damages your small intestine’s lining and prevents it from absorbing some nutrients (malabsorption). The intestinal damage often causes diarrhoea, fatigue, weight loss, bloating and anaemia, and can lead to serious complications.

Coeliac disease is a disorder that affects at least 1 in every 100 people in the UK. Some professionals think this may be undervalued due to milder cases that may go undiagnosed or be misdiagnosed as other digestive conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome. Reported cases of coeliac disease are approximately 3 times higher in females than males.

Celiac disease can be developed at any age, though symptoms are most likely to develop:

  • throughout early childhood – between 8 and 12 months old, whilst it could take numerous years before a precise diagnosis is made
  • in later adulthood – between 40 and 60 years of age Individuals with certain conditions, such as type 1 diabetes, autoimmune thyroid disease, down syndrome and Turner syndrome, have an increased risk of getting coeliac disease.
  • First-degree relatives (parents, brothers, sisters and children) of individuals with coeliac disease are also at larger risk of developing the condition.

  • Joint pain
  • Reduced functioning of the spleen (hyposplenism)

Children with celiac disease are more likely than adults to have digestive problems, malabsorption which can affect growth and development, besides causing the symptoms seen in adults. Including: 

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Chronic diarrhoea
  • Swollen belly
  • Constipation
  • Gas
  • Pale, foul-smelling stools

The inability to absorb nutrients might result in:

  • Failure to thrive for infants
  • Damage to tooth enamel
  • Weight loss
  • Anaemia
  • Irritability
  • Short stature
  • Delayed puberty

Also, neurological symptoms, involving attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), learning disabilities, headaches, lack of muscle coordination and seizures

 

Celiac disease inclines to run in families. If somebody in your family has the condition, speak with your doctor to see if you need to be tested.

Testing for coeliac disease involves having: 

  • Blood tests
  • A biopsy 

Whilst being tested for celiac disease, you’ll need to eat foods containing gluten to guarantee the tests are accurate. You should also ear normally and not start a gluten-free diet pending the diagnosis is confirmed by a specialist, even if the results of blood tests are positive. If coeliac disease antibodies are found in your blood, your doctor will refer you for a biopsy of your gut.   • Microscopic colitis (lymphocytic or collagenous colitis)
  • Addison’s disease

Complications:

Complications of coeliac disease only incline to affect individuals who continue to eat gluten, or those who have not yet been diagnosed with the condition, which could be a common problem in milder cases.

Untreated, celiac disease can cause:

  • Cancer. People with celiac disease who don’t maintain a gluten-free diet have a larger risk of developing numerous forms of cancer, including intestinal lymphoma and small bowel cancer.
  • Nervous system problems. Several individuals with celiac disease could develop difficulties such as seizures or a disease of the nerves to the hands and feet (peripheral neuropathy).

Nonresponsive celiac disease:

Several individuals with celiac disease don’t respond to what they believe to be a gluten-free diet. Nonresponsive celiac disease is frequently due to contamination of the diet with gluten. Working with a dietitian can help you learn how to avoid all gluten.

Individuals with nonresponsive celiac disease might have:

  • Bacteria in the small intestine (bacterial overgrowth)
  • Microscopic colitis
  • Poor pancreas function (pancreatic insufficiency)

  • Difficulty digesting sugar found in dairy products (lactose), table sugar (sucrose), or a type of sugar found in honey and fruits (fructose)

Refractory celiac disease:

In extraordinary cases, the intestinal injury of celiac disease doesn’t respond to a strict gluten-free diet. This is known as refractory celiac disease. If you still have signs and symptoms after following a gluten-free diet for six months to one year, you may need additional testing to look for other reasons for your symptoms. 

Treating Celiac disease

There’s no cure for coeliac disease, but following a gluten-free diet ought to help regulate symptoms and avoid the long-term problems of the condition.

Celiac disease can also cause more general symptoms, including:

  • Tiredness 
  • Unintentional weight loss 
  • An itchy rash 
  • Infertility 
  • Nerve damage 
  • Ataxia – Disorders that effect balance and speech
  • Delayed puberty in children and stunted growth.

If your doctor has diagnosed you with celiac disease, you may be entitled for gluten free staple foods on prescription. Just like getting medicine on prescription, your GP can write a prescription which you can collect from your pharmacist.

Support Groups:

What is irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)? And how can I treat it?

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is an uncomfortable disorder characterised by intense changes in bowel movements. Several individuals experience diarrhoea, whereas others have constipation.  Cramps and abdomen pain can make everyday activities unbearable.

Medical intervention is significant in the treatment of IBS, but did you know that certain diets could improve your symptoms? Discover the most common diets presented to decrease uncomfortable symptoms, and work toward leading a healthy life.

Can I suddenly get IBS?

The simple answer is Yes. Similar to any medical condition IBS develops at some point-one day you have normal bowel movements and the next day you start to notice changes. Perhaps you start having diarrhoea and gas or constipation and bloating. The 2 things most likely to make your IBS symptoms worse are the foods we eat and consuming emotional stress. Diet. Eating makes your colon muscles move or contract.

Common IBS symptoms:

  • Stomach pain – frequently worse following eating and better after doing a poo.
  • Bloating – your Stomach may feel uncomfortably full and bloated.
  • Diarrhoea – and occasionally need to poo suddenly.
  • Constipation – you may have the urge to poo, but are not able to empty your bowels. 

IBS can also cause:

  • farting (flatulence)
  • passing mucus from your bottom
  • tiredness and a lack of energy
  • feeling sick (nausea)
  • backache
  • problems peeing – like needing to pee often, sudden urges to pee, and feeling like you cannot fully empty your bladder
  • not always being able to control when you poo (incontinence) 

What are the tests for IBS:

There’s no test for IBS, but you might need some tests to rule out other possible causes of your symptoms.

The GP may arrange:

  • a blood test to check for problems like coeliac disease  
  • tests on a sample of your poo to check for infections and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)

You will not usually need further tests in hospital unless the GP is not sure what the problem is. 

What happens if you are diagnosed with IBS:

If your GP suggests that you do have IBS, then they can discuss treatment options such as a FODMAP diet.

What is a FODMAP diet? A low-FODMAP diet is designed to help people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) have better control over their symptoms by limiting certain foods. FODMAPs stands for fermentable oligo-saccharides, di-saccharides, mono-saccharides and polyols.

Not everybody that has IBS needs to follow a FODMAP diet, however, FODMAP diet has been a revelation in the treatment for IBS symptoms. Now there are numerous things we can do to manage your IBS. Because what you eat can have a major result on our body’s, digestive issues are incredibly common. Fodmaps are types of carbohydrates found in certain foods, including wheat and beans.

Studies have shown strong links between FODMAPs and digestive symptoms like gas, bloating, stomach pain, diarrhoea and constipation. Low-FODMAP diets can offer extraordinary benefits for countless people with common digestive disorders. Most FODMAP-trained dietitians have reported it takes an average of 2-4 weeks to see obvious changes. Everyone’s bodies are different Some people have stated seeing changes in the first few days, while others see a shift right at the 4-week mark. To avoid overly restrictive meals, speak with a dietician before beginning this diet.

Low-FODMAP diet:

FODMAPs are carbohydrates that are problematic for the intestines to digest. Subsequently because these carbs pull more water into the bowel, individuals with IBS might experience more gas, bloating, and diarrhoea after consuming these foods. Temporarily kerbing or reducing your intake of high FODMAP foods for six to eight weeks could improve your symptoms of IBS.

  • cashews and pistachios

Consider while this diet rejects some fruits, nuts, vegetables, and dairy, it doesn’t remove all foods from these categories. If you drink milk, choose lactose-free milk or other replacements such as rice or soy milk. There may find some days your symptoms are better than others (flare-ups). They may be triggered by food or drink:

What can trigger IBS?

Too much fibre, particularly the insoluble kind you get in the skin of fruits and vegetables. Food and drinks with chocolate, alcohol, caffeine, fructose, or sorbitol. Carbonated drinks. Large meals. 

Tips to relieve IBS symptoms:

Do’s

  • cook homemade meals using fresh ingredients when you can
  • keep a diary of what you eat and any symptoms you get – try to avoid things that trigger your IBS
  • Try include probiotics
  • try to find ways to relax
  • get plenty of exercise

Don’t

  • do not defer or skip meals
  • do not eat too quickly
  • do not eat lots of fatty, spicy or processed foods
  • do not eat more than 3 portions of fresh fruit a day (a portion is 80g)
  • do not drink more than 3 cups of tea or coffee a day
  • do not drink lots of alcohol or fizzy drinks

 

How to ease cramps, gas and bloating:

  • eat oats (such as porridge) frequently
  • eat up to 1 tablespoon of linseeds a daily
  • avoid foods that are hard to digest (like cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, beans, onions and dried fruit)
  • avoid food and drinks containing a sweetener called sorbitol
  • ask a pharmacist about medicines that can help, like Buscopan or peppermint oil

 

Managing diarrhoea:

  • Reduce high -fibre foods such as Wholegrain foods (brown bread, brown rice, nuts and seeds.
  • Avoid sorbitol sweeteners
  • Speak with your pharmacist regarding medications available to reduce diarrhoea

Relieving constipation:

  • Ensure you drink plenty of water, to soften poo

What You Need to Know About peppermint essential oil

The peppermint plant is an all-around perennial herb that has been valued since ancient times. The plant’s first recorded arrival dates back to 1000 BC when dried peppermint leaves were found entombed in ancient Egyptian pyramids. Throughout human history, this herb has been cherished as a multi-purpose plant and an essential oil whose components are now used by cosmetic, culinary, and health industries around the world.

Medical uses of peppermint oil:

In dietary supplements, peppermint oil capsules have been tried for a variety of digestive problems including: Nausea, Irritable bowel syndrome, indigestion and heartburn.

Dietary supplements containing peppermint oil are also used by some people for the following conditions: 

Vomiting, morning sickness, cramps of upper gastrointestinal tract and bile ducts, diarrhoea, gas, colds, coughs, inflammation of the mouth and throat, sinus and respiratory infections and menstrual problems

Skin preparations containing peppermint oil are used by some people for the following conditions: 

Headache, muscle pain, nerve pain, toothache, inflammation of the mouth, joint conditions, itchiness, allergic rash, repelling mosquitoes. In addition, peppermint oil vapor is sometimes inhaled to treat symptoms of colds and coughs. Also, some doctors add peppermint oil to a barium solution to relax the colon during barium enemas.

Peppermint oil has a wide variety of uses – it can be used for:

  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), nausea, and other digestive issues, as well as the Common cold, and headaches a topical application for relief from itching, muscle pain, and headache
  • a flavouring agent in foods and in products such as mouthwashes
  • a fresh, pleasing scent added to soaps and cosmetic products

IBS:

Scientists have extensively studied into the benefits of peppermint oil has focused on IBS. IBS is a chronic gastrointestinal (GI) condition that can include abdominal pain, diarrhoea, and constipation. Their findings found that treatment with peppermint oil improved abdominal pain and other symptoms of IBS. The specific ways peppermint oil helps ease the symptoms of IBS and other GI conditions are:

  • relaxing the smooth muscles of the GI tract
  • having an anti-inflammatory effect

  • You should avoid applying peppermint oil to the faces or chests of babies and young children. Side effects can occur from inhaling the menthol present in peppermint oil.
  • Peppermint oil may cause side effects such as heartburn and it may interact with certain medications. Talk to your doctor before using peppermint oil.
  • Additionally, be aware that peppermint oil and aromatherapy in general can be toxic to pets. 
  • In some cases, peppermint oil may cause irritation or rashes when applied directly to the skin. Most people tolerate it well when it is properly diluted with a carrier oil before being applied topically, but those with very sensitive skin may want to test it on a small patch of skin first.

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil – Everything you need to know !

Ylang ylang, or cananga odorata, (a plant native to the Philippines and Indonesia), Ylang ylang essential oil is a type of essential oil commonly used in aromatherapy. characterized by its drooping branches and bright green leaves. Along the green stems of this plant grow stalks from which multiple yellow-green flowers bloom. These flowers dangle from the stalks and are highly fragrant. The pungent flowers also produce green fruits that grow in clusters and turn black when ripe. ylang ylang essential oil is said to offer a variety of health benefits. 

Grading of Ylang Ylang:

There are three distinctive grades of ylang ylang oil; extra, first, second and third. Extra grade refers to oil that is acquired within an hour of distillation, and is measured the most fragrant; this grade is used most commonly in the perfume production. First is taken up to four hours after distillation starts, second after roughly seven hours, and third can be taken up to ten hours after distillation starts. Usually, first through third grades are used in soap and cosmetic manufacturing.

Fill your home with the rich and sweet scents of the tropical Ylang Ylang flower. The smell of ylang ylang oil in aromatherapy is used for memory and thinking skills. In manufacturing, it is used as a fragrance for cosmetics and soaps.
This yellow, star-shaped flower is a treasure of the aroma industry and its essential oil can be used to generate a relaxing atmosphere. Rheumatoid arthritis: 200–400 mg, 3x times per day

Ulcerative colitis: 350–400 mg, 3x times per day

Gingivitis: 100–200 mg, 3x times per day

Asthma: 300–400 mg, 3xtimes per day

Crohn’s disease: 1,200 mg, 3x times per day

Osteoarthritis: 200 mg, 3x times per day

  • Research is needed to assess the potential benefits and risks. Ingesting frankincense essential oil may have toxic effects and isn’t recommended, unless under a doctor’s supervision.
  • In addition, some individuals may experience irritation or an allergic reaction when applying frankincense essential oil to the skin. A skin patch test should be done before using any new essential oil. Additionally, essential oils shouldn’t be applied to skin undiluted.
  • Pregnant or nursing women and children should consult their health care providers before using essential oils.

Jasmin originating from China and Northern India, for centuries, jasmine has been popular for its sweet, romantic fragrance and derived from the white flowers of the common jasmine plant, also known as Jasminun officinale. Jasmin oil travelled across the globe to the Ancient Egyptians who used it for nervous disorders, headaches and to promote better quality sleep. This showed that the calming properties of Jasmin oil were recognised very early on.

Antidepressant:

Scientists have discovered that Jasmin essential oil partially through massage was effective in reducing depressive symptoms.   • diluted in a carrier oil and added to a warm bath
  • mixed with a carrier oil, such as almond oil, and applied topically or as a massage oil

Is jasmine oil safe?  

  • Jasmine oil is usually considered safe and reports of skin irritation are incredibly rare. Like any plant, there is always the risk of an allergic reaction. Essential oils must be diluted in a carrier oil before applying to the skin. Essential oils are not meant to be ingested and some are toxic.
  • You should test new products by placing a small amount of diluted oil on a patch of skin on your forearm. If there’s no reaction in 24 hours, it should be safe to use.
  • If you are pregnant or nursing, or have a history of severe allergic reactions, speak to a doctor before using any essential oil.
